Anochi
Anochi (“I”): G‑d’s own Essence, “I who am I”
Anochi (“I”), as in “Anochi Havayah your G‑d”: G‑d’s own Essence, “I Myself,” beyond every name, even Havayah; at Sinai it was drawn to Israel, through Havayah, to become “your G‑d.”
The word Anochi is also the plain word “I,” as when Moshe says “Who am I (mi anochi) that I should go to Pharaoh.” The text means the level where it says אנכי מי שאנכי or בחי׳ אנכי, contrasts Anochi with Havayah or with Ani, or reads G‑d’s “Anochi” in a verse (“Anochi Havayah your G‑d,” “which Anochi command you”) as His Essence.
Where it’s explained
- Likkutei Torah, Nitzavim 2, ¶3The worlds come only from a radiance of His Name, through Havayah, contraction and expansion; and “I am Havayah, that is My Name” is only a name, which is for others. Anochi, “I who am I,” is His Essence, not called by any name. That Havayah is drawn from Anochi to create the worlds is because He is “your G‑d”: Israel draws it down through the mitzvos.
- Likkutei Torah, Shabbos Shuvah 1, ¶5To draw down Havayah one must first cry out from the depth of the heart and be nullified in the Or Ein Sof itself, above Havayah, which from the side of His Essence is called Anochi, not held in a name. Of this it says “I, I (Anochi Anochi) am He who wipes away your transgressions”; on Yom Kippur the souls rise there, “before Havayah,” through Yaakov’s attribute of mercy.
- Likkutei Torah, Shabbos Shuvah 1, ¶13At Sinai Anochi was said once, and at Tavor twice. Through the mitzvos one draws Havayah from Anochi, to be “your G‑d”; in teshuvah it says Anochi twice, corresponding to two depths of the heart, and this is above the drawing through the mitzvos.
- Likkutei Torah, Bamidbar 14, ¶8In Keser there is a lower level that belongs to the Emanator, which no thought grasps at all: this is Anochi. So the fiftieth gate, revealed on Shavuos, is beyond our power to draw down and comes of itself.
- Torah Ohr, Yisro 1, ¶15“Anochi Havayah your G‑d who took you out of Egypt”: in receiving the Torah, Anochi itself, His Essence, sovev kol almin, was drawn into Israel. The next paragraph adds that it comes to them through Havayah, contraction and expansion, until it is truly “your G‑d,” and this gives the divine soul strength to leave the bounds of body and animal soul.
Stated differently
What level Anochi names
Anochi is His Essence itself, not held in the order of worlds, separate, and not called by any name, as opposed to Havayah, which is a name.
Anochi is Keser, as Ani is Malchus; the added kaf (20) hints at Keser. The doubled “Anochi Anochi” is the two levels in Keser: the lowest of the Emanator and the root of the emanated.
Anochi is the inner dimension of the Supernal Will, lowered (“I taught to walk”) into the Oral Torah and its halachos about this world, so that it be revealed in the souls.
Anochi is the hidden world (alma d’iskasya), as opposed to Ani, Torah and mitzvos below.
Whether Anochi is sovev kol almin or above even sovev
Anochi Havayah your G‑d”: Anochi is sovev kol almin, drawn through Havayah to be truly “your G‑d”; each mitzvah draws a new radiance from sovev.
שבחי׳ אנכי הוא בחי׳ סובב כל עלמין נמשך בבחינת היום לעשותם דוקא“Which Anochi command you this day”: Anochi is sovev kol almin, which rests as an encompassing light over the soul in this world, drawn through doing the mitzvos “this day,” with power to transform a person’s nature.
הוי׳ אלקיך היינו סוכ״ע וממכ״ע, אבל אנכי מי שאנכי הוא עצמות אור א״ס שלמעלה גם מסוכ״ע“Havayah your G‑d” is sovev and memalei; Anochi is the Essence of the Or Ein Sof, above even sovev, which is revealed and drawn to become truly “Havayah your G‑d,” through Torah study.
What Ani, the level below Anochi, is
The difference between Ani and Anochi is the kaf: Ani is Malchus, and Anochi, Keser, is more exalted, as “King of kings.”
Ani is Torah and mitzvos below, as they are enclothed in physical matters and set limits for them (such as a revi’is of water for washing the hands); like a bent cypress, they spring back up to the supernal source.
