Supernal Will
The Supernal Will (ratzon ha’elyon) · also:
G‑d’s will above Chochmah (Keser): the source of the worlds and root of the mitzvos and Torah, partly clothed in Chochmah and partly not; in the soul it is the inner heart.
Where it’s explained
- Likkutei Torah, Shemini Atzeres 1, ¶9As in the soul, made of seven middos and three intellects, the will stands above them and leads its Chochmah, Binah and Daas, so the mitzvos are called the Supernal Will, above Chochmah: Keser, 620 “pillars of light” (613 and the seven rabbinic mitzvos) joining roof to floor. It is drawn from the supernal delight and descends level by level until it is clothed in the physical deed.
- Torah Ohr, Vayakhel 1, ¶37The Torah “comes out” from Chochmah, from concealment into revelation, but its root is the Supernal Will; it is clothed in the middos of Atzilus (lenient from Chesed, strict from Gevurah), and so through it the Supernal Will is drawn into the lower will, the lower Daas.
- Likkutei Torah, Rosh Hashanah 3, ¶5The Supernal Will drawn all year through Torah and mitzvos is the will clothed in Chochmah Ila’ah; on Rosh Hashanah, through the supernal will in the soul (the shofar), it is drawn from a higher aspect not clothed in Chochmah at all, so that the will of the Emanator clothes itself in Malchus.
- Torah Ohr, Vayechi 4, ¶14The source of the worlds’ coming to be from nothing is the Supernal Will, and the Torah, His wisdom and will, opens the contractions so that it is revealed in all the life of the worlds. In a person it is revealed as the supernal will of the soul, the great love (ahavah rabbah) rooted in its source.
- Likkutei Torah, Rosh Hashanah 4, ¶6The outer heart is below intellect, but the inner heart is the Supernal Will, above Chochmah, relative to which Chochmah is called “making.” The shofar’s simple voice reveals it, above the letters of the Torah, which come from Chochmah.
Stated differently
Whether Torah study draws a higher, inner aspect of the Supernal Will than the mitzvos do, or the mitzvos are the inner Supernal Will above Chochmah and the Torah, from Chochmah, is what brings it into revelation
The deed of the mitzvos is the lower unity, drawing the Supernal Will “in number”; Torah study, equal to them all, is the higher unity, beyond number, because it is His very will. The mitzvos draw the outer side of the Supernal Will, the Torah its inner side (“love in delights”).
The mitzvos are from the Supernal Will, above Chochmah, and are “master” of Chochmah, while the Torah issues from Chochmah; the Torah, explaining the reasons of the mitzvos, is the intermediary through which the Supernal Will is revealed in their deed.
The mitzvos are the inner side of the Supernal Will, which is above Chochmah; through them the supernal delight, Or Ein Sof itself, is revealed, beyond what created souls receive in the World to Come.
