Le’asid lavo

The Time to Come (le’asid lavo)

The era of Mashiach, the resurrection and the seventh millennium, when this world’s concealment turns to light and G‑dliness is seen “eye to eye” forever: the fruit of service now, in exile.

The word לעתיד לבא (often לע״ל or לעתיד) is literally “in the time to come.” In these maamarim it names the coming era as a whole; which stage is meant (the days of Mashiach, the resurrection, the seventh millennium) has to be read from the context.

Where it’s explained

  1. Likkutei Torah, Shabbos Shuvah 1, ¶1“World” (olam) means concealment, the darkness that hides Or Ein Sof within it; in the Time to Come this darkness will turn to light, and this comes through our service in exile, subduing and transforming the soul.
  2. Torah Ohr, Shemos 2, ¶23The completion of the revelation at Sinai will be in the Time to Come, in the days of Mashiach: “eye to eye,” and not only for the moment as at Sinai, but forever and without interruption, without the toil needed now.
  3. Likkutei Torah, Behar 3, ¶15The souls’ descent is for an ascent whose main part is in the Time to Come, “the day that is entirely Shabbos”: what now shines only as an encompassing light (sovev) will then be openly revealed, and new souls will come from above the kav.
  4. Likkutei Torah, Shir HaShirim 42, ¶12Now everything is drawn by an arousal from below, and only from the outer level of Atik; the “new heavens and new earth” are a drawing from the inner level of Atik, above the shattering and the rectification, by an arousal from above alone. The present heavens and earth will rise too, since all refinement will be complete.
  5. Likkutei Torah, Shabbos Shuvah 2, ¶3In the Time to Come the world’s physicality will be refined, “all flesh will see,” and supernal nourishment will reach the physical body itself, as Moshe on the mountain lived from the spiritual.

Stated differently

When “tomorrow, to receive their reward”, the main reward and revelation, comes: in the days of Mashiach, or only after them (after the resurrection, or in the seventh millennium), the days of Mashiach still being “today, to do them”

Likkutei Torah, Shabbos Shuvah 1, ¶1

Through the knowledge of “today, to do them” one merits the days of Mashiach, “tomorrow, to receive their reward,” as actual sight.

Torah Ohr, Shemos 2, ¶23

The purpose and completion of the revelation will be in the Time to Come, in the days of Mashiach.

Torah Ohr, Vayechi 3, ¶2

The days of Mashiach are not the World to Come after the resurrection, the reward of the righteous; they are still “today, to do them,” not the receiving of reward.

Likkutei Torah, Bechukosai 2, ¶32

In the days of Mashiach, until the resurrection, the service will be in practical mitzvos, only in its completeness.

Likkutei Torah, Shir HaShirim 42, ¶12

Gan Eden is only temporary; the main reward is only in the seventh millennium, “tomorrow, to receive their reward.”

Likkutei Torah, Behar 3, ¶15

The main ascent is in the Time to Come, “the day that is entirely Shabbos”; the new souls drawn from sovev will come in the seventh millennium, the higher Shabbos.

“The light of the moon will be like the light of the sun”: whether Malchus (Nukva) will be equal in stature with Z”A, or above him, “the crown of her husband” (LT Tzav 3:3 states both together)

Likkutei Torah, Bamidbar 7, ¶8

In the Time to Come Z”A and Nukva will be equal in stature: both will receive equally from Chochmah Ila’ah, as Abba and Imma do.

Torah Ohr, Megillas Esther 11, ¶12

When all the refinements are complete, Malchus, the name Ban, will be the crown of her husband, the name Mah, by rising to the level of Sag, which is above Mah.

Likkutei Torah, Tzav 3, ¶3

In the Time to Come the woman of valor will be the crown of her husband, and the moon’s light like the sun’s, equal in stature, using one crown, from the revelation of sovev below.

What becomes of the present heavens and earth in the Time to Come: they will be no more, only the new heavens and earth; their physicality will cease and a new creation be renewed; or they will not be nullified entirely but rise too

Likkutei Torah, Shir HaShirim 15, ¶10

When G‑dliness is revealed in the Time to Come, “the heavens will vanish like smoke and the earth wear out like a garment”: there will be no physical heavens and earth, only the new heavens and the new earth.

Likkutei Torah, Chukas 10, ¶11

“The heavens will vanish like smoke”: their physicality will come to an end, and a new creation, new heavens and earth, will be renewed, no longer hiding the light from Or Ein Sof.

Likkutei Torah, Shir HaShirim 42, ¶12

The present heavens and earth will not be nullified entirely; they too will rise and “stand before Me”, since then all refinements will already be complete.
