Romemus
Exaltedness (romemus)
Exaltedness: G‑d’s being raised above the worlds, as a king above his people. It is His kingship (Malchus), which withdraws rather than enters them, and so makes them separate beings who bow before Him.
The word רוממות and התנשאות also describe a person: haughtiness (גבהות, the leaven of Pesach) or the soul’s contemplation of G‑d’s exaltedness (רוממות אל, Pesukei DeZimrah). As a concept it is G‑d’s exaltedness above the worlds, chiefly His kingship.
Where it’s explained
- Likkutei Torah, Rosh Hashanah 3, ¶4Malchus is exaltedness: in it the light is set apart and raised beyond relation, and the worlds receive only from it, so their life is “something from nothing,” a bounded yesh. Had they received from the attributes of Z”A themselves, it would be like “something from something.” Yet they are nullified, accepting His kingship willingly.
- Likkutei Torah, Balak 1, ¶22Because He is high and exalted above them, they become a “people” (am), from omemus: things alien and separate, for “there is no king without a people.” So before a king seated on his throne all tremble and become lowly.
- Torah Ohr, Megillas Esther 1, ¶19Exaltedness in itself is a withdrawal of the life from Or Ein Sof, so that it not shine in great revelation and the worlds not be nullified out of existence. Only after He is raised above the worlds is His kingship and exaltedness over them revealed, as sovev, encompassing all equally.
- Torah Ohr, Vayakhel 2, ¶8A king’s exaltedness over his people is not drawn into them but shines as from outside, encompassing. So G‑d’s exaltedness, His kingship, is sovev, giving life to the worlds from around them, while the life within them (memalei) comes from the letters of His speech. His essence is above even this, as a king’s essence is not his exaltedness over a people.
- Torah Ohr, Vayakhel 2, ¶19Drawing exaltedness down from His essence to be sovev is a descent, yet since it is not clothed in the worlds but raised above them, it is like an ascent from below. So the first terumah is “to Havayah,” the lamed denoting ascent from below upward, and the Zohar calls this drawing-down “the glory of the Holy One rose.”
Stated differently
What “He who is exalted above the days of the world” (hamisnasei mimos olam) names: His kingship in the descending order, the light that encompasses all worlds, exaltedness itself as distinct from that encompassing light, the upper three of Atik, or His essence above both sovev and memalei
Malchus is exaltedness, “exalted above the days of the world”: a withdrawal that hides the attributes of Atzilus as the sea covers what is in it. This belongs to the light coming down the order of hishtalshelus from Atzilus to Beriah, Yetzirah and Asiyah, from memalei; before sovev, hidden and revealed are alike.
He is “exalted above the days of the world,” not in the category of worlds at all, because He is sovev kol almin; so there is great mercy on man, who has become physical and very far from Him.
The light drawn onto a person by doing the mitzvos is from exaltedness alone, “exalted above the days of the world,” which in itself is a withdrawal of the life from Or Ein Sof; only after He is raised above the worlds is His kingship revealed, and that is sovev, encompassing all equally.
The “days of the world” are the seven days of creation, the lower seven of Atik; “exalted above the days of the world” is said of the upper three of Atik.
The essence of Or Ein Sof is far above both memalei and sovev and not in the category of worlds, as in “exalted above the days of the world”; the Name Havayah is called sovev, and at the splitting of the sea the revelation came from above sovev.
