The big idea
The soul is Ishah, esh hei: a fire of yearning kindled by the outer glimmer of G‑d’s Malchus. It receives from Ish, esh yud, the self-nullification of supernal Chochmah, which comes from the “hairs” of the light above Chochmah and is drawn down through the mitzvos; by doing them and keeping the heart free of the “strange fire” of worldly passion, Israel become givers who draw holiness into the world.
The maamar in brief
Reading the tzitzis verses, the Alter Rebbe pictures the Congregation of Israel as G‑d’s bride. Ishah (woman) is esh hei, fire and hei: the hei is G‑d’s creative speech, an outer glimmer of His Malchus, which kindles in the souls a fiery yearning to dissolve into the Infinite Light. Ish (man) is esh yud: the yud is supernal Chochmah, a point of pure self-nullification, “from ayin.” This bittul reaches the souls through the 248 mitzvos, the “limbs of the King,” within the bounds of tzimtzum, so that a separate being itself becomes nullified. Its source is the Infinite Light above Chochmah, which passes through narrow “hairs” and so divides into countless distinct worlds; these hairs are the wool of the tzitzis, dyed techeles, the color of a flame gripping a wick, like the Throne of Glory and Malchus. All this depends on Israel’s service: doing the mitzvos makes them zecharim, givers, provided they do not stray after the heart’s strange fire but take worldly pleasure coolly. Then they draw holiness into Malchus, the G‑dliness within them: the lower unity, a bittul in which one still exists, which the maamar contrasts with the higher unity of Chochmah, in which one is nothing at all.
Outline
- The bride and the name IshahThe Congregation of Israel is the bride. Ishah is esh hei: the hei is G‑d’s creative speech, an outer glimmer of Malchus, which kindles in the souls a fire of yearning, “the lamp of Havayah.”¶1–3
- Ish: the yud of Chochmah and the mitzvosIsh is esh yud, supernal Chochmah, the point of bittul from ayin. It reaches the souls through the 248 mitzvos, the limbs of the King, within tzimtzum; an aside shows the yud entering the dalet to make a hei, and the two fires of “Sustain me with ashishos.”¶4–5
- The hairs above ChochmahChochmah’s bittul comes from the Infinite Light above it through contracted “hairs,” which divide the flow into countless worlds and separate intellects, each nullified by its own grasp.¶6
- TechelesThe tzitzis thread is wool, the hairs, dyed techeles, the color of a flame gripping a wick; like the Throne of Glory it signifies Malchus, from which the worlds receive life only through bittul.¶7–8
- Remember, and do not strayIsrael’s mitzvos draw this light and become zecharim, givers. This requires not straying after the heart’s strange fire: worldly pleasure is to be taken coolly, work kept occasional, so that deeds shine with the Infinite Light.¶9–11
- Doing and holiness“And you shall do them” makes Israel givers, rooted first in thought; “you shall be holy” draws the holiness of the hairs into Malchus, the lower unity, which is contrasted with the higher unity of Chochmah.¶12–13
Key concepts
- Ishah: esh hei
- The soul’s fire of yearning to be absorbed into G‑d, kindled by the hei, the outer glimmer of G‑d’s Malchus and creative speech.
- Ish: esh yud
- Supernal Chochmah, the small point of the yud: complete self-nullification, from which the soul’s power of bittul comes.
- Hairsשערות
- The contracted channel by which the Infinite Light above Chochmah is revealed in it, like hair that draws only the overflow of the brain; it divides the flow into countless worlds.
- Techeles
- The sky-blue of the tzitzis thread: the light of the hairs as it comes down and grips the worlds, like a flame on a wick; it resembles the Throne of Glory, Malchus.
- Zecharim (givers)
- Read into “and you shall remember”: through the mitzvos Israel become givers who draw Chochmah and bittul down into the world.
- The lower and higher unity
- The lower unity is the bittul of a being who still exists and bows; the higher unity is the bittul of Chochmah, in which one is nothing at all.
The bride and the name Ishah ¶1–3
“And it shall be to you as tzitzis, and you shall see it and remember, etc. … So that you remember and do, etc.” Now, the Congregation of Israel (Knesses Yisrael) is called a bride, and the Holy One, blessed be He, is called by the name groom, as it is said, “‘On the day of his wedding’: this is the Giving of the Torah,” and it is written, “On that day you will call [Me] Ishi (my Husband), etc.”
The maamar opens with the verses of tzitzis (Numbers 15:39–40), whose words “see,” “remember” and “do” it will explain one by one. It starts from the image of a marriage: the Congregation of Israel (Knesses Yisrael), the collective source of the Jewish souls, is the bride and the Holy One, blessed be He, is the groom, as the Sages read “the day of his wedding” as the Giving of the Torah, and as Hosea foretells that Israel will call G‑d Ishi, “my Husband.”
The opening verses of tzitzis are set beside the theme of the whole maamar: the bond between G‑d and Israel as that of groom and bride, ish (man) and ishah (woman).
According to the Kehot notes, the maamar dates from the year 5565 (1804–05). A parenthetical passage in Likkutei Torah, V’Zos HaBerachah, notes that some Midrashim make the Torah the bride and Israel the groom, while others make Israel the bride, and records the answer that relative to the Holy One, Israel is called a bride; this maamar itself later calls the Torah a bride betrothed to the souls of Israel.

And the explanation is: it is written, “This shall be called Ishah (woman), for from Ish (man) this was taken.” For the Congregation of Israel is called by the name Ishah on account of esh hei (fire [and the letter] hei);
The verse in Genesis says that woman (ishah) was so named because she was taken from man (ish). The Alter Rebbe reads ishah as two parts, esh (fire) and the letter hei, and applies the name to the Congregation of Israel, the bride of the opening paragraph.
for “with hei He created them”: the five articulations of the mouth, and “by the breath of His mouth all their host,” which is the source and origin of the Ten Utterances with which the world was created, that is, the one utterance [with which] it could have been created, etc.
The hei is tied to creation: the Sages read “when they were created” (behibar’am) as “with hei He created them,” and hei, whose value is five, stands for the five places in the mouth where speech is formed, as Sefer Yetzirah (2:3) teaches. This “breath of His mouth” is the source from which the Ten Utterances of creation issue, and the text identifies it with the “one utterance” with which, the Mishnah says, the world could have been created.
The name ishah is read as esh and hei, and the hei is identified with G‑d’s creative speech, the “breath of His mouth” from which the Ten Utterances come.
Following the Kehot note, the Tzemach Tzedek’s Or HaTorah links this to Likkutei Torah, Nasso, which distinguishes the source of life, the breath of G‑d’s mouth, from the Ten Utterances, which are letters that have already gone out of that breath.

And the meaning of the hei is this: it is “a light letter that has no substance” (asa kalila delis bei mamasha), for it is a mere glimmer that goes out from the breath of the heart to the mouth, to be the source of speech; and that glimmer does not touch the essence and being of the soul,
The letter hei is called in Aramaic “a light letter that has no substance,” since it is pronounced with breath alone. Speech likewise comes from the breath of the heart, a mere glimmer of the soul that does not involve the soul’s essence.
but is only the power of extension from it, which is drawn from the level of the outer dimension (chitzoniyus) alone, for this is not a drawing-forth of the inner dimension (pnimiyus) of the soul. And so, by way of analogy, the life-force (chayus) that is drawn forth for the creation and coming into being of the worlds from nothing to something, and to be the light that fills all worlds (memalei kol almin) and the light that encompasses all worlds (sovev kol almin), is nothing
Speech is only the soul’s power of reaching outward, drawn from its outer dimension and not from its inner core. By analogy, the divine life-force that brings the worlds into being and both fills and encompasses them is likewise, as the next part says, only an outer radiance.
but a radiance and glimmer from the level of the outer dimension, that is, from the level of His Malchus (sovereignty), may He be blessed, which is only an extension to what is other than Himself, etc., for there is no king without a people, etc.,
That radiance comes from G‑d’s Malchus (sovereignty), which by nature reaches out to what is other than Him, since a king needs a people to rule. Creating the worlds uses only this outer dimension of G‑dliness, as speech uses only the outer dimension of the soul.
as is explained elsewhere. And this glimmer and drawing-forth in the Congregation of Israel, the source of souls, so that they have fire and fervor, to be kindled and set ablaze with flashes of fire and a yearning to be nullified and included in the Infinite Light (Or Ein Sof), blessed be He, is called Ishah: esh
When this same glimmer of Malchus shines into the Congregation of Israel, the source of the souls, it kindles in them a fiery yearning to be nullified and absorbed into the Infinite Light. Because of this fire (esh) from the hei, the Congregation of Israel is called Ishah.
hei. And as it is written, “And your yearning shall be to your Ish (husband),” and it is written, “The lamp of Havayah is the soul of man”: for the soul is called a lamp, like a lamp that burns from below upward by its inborn nature, and like a flame that rises of itself, before its coming into this world to be enclothed in the physical body;
Two verses support this: the woman’s “yearning” is to her Ish, and the soul is “the lamp of Havayah.” A flame naturally strains upward, and so the soul, by its very nature and before it ever enters a body, rises toward its source.
and afterwards too, whoever comes to fill his hand and his heart for G‑d, it is within the power of his soul to arouse the love, etc., as is explained in Sefer Shel Beinonim (the Tanya).
Even once it is in the body, anyone who resolves to devote himself to G‑d can awaken this love by the power of his soul. The Alter Rebbe refers to his Tanya (Sefer Shel Beinonim), where this love of the G‑dly soul is explained.
Speech and creation come only from an outer glimmer, G‑d’s Malchus; yet this same glimmer, shining in the souls of Israel, makes them a fire that yearns upward: Ishah, esh hei, “the lamp of Havayah.”
In the Tanya (Likkutei Amarim, chapter 19) the Alter Rebbe explains “the lamp of Havayah is the soul of man” through the flame of a lamp, which by its nature strains upward to separate from the wick and cling to its root above; this is the inborn love of the G‑dly soul to which he refers here.

Ish: the yud of Chochmah and the mitzvos ¶4–5
But [we need] to understand: since the life-force is drawn forth so that there be created beings, from nothing to something, which are the level of am (a people), [as in] omemos (dimmed), separate [beings], from where will they have the power to have the level of self-nullification (bittul) and inclusion in the Infinite One (Ein Sof), etc.?
The question: the life-force that creates beings from nothing makes them separate and distant, an am (people), a word the Alter Rebbe links to omemos, “dimmed” embers. From where, then, could such separate beings get the power to nullify themselves and be absorbed into the Infinite One?
Now, about this the verse said, “For from Ish this was taken”: Ish is esh yud (fire [and the letter] yud). For the yud is the level of supernal Chochmah (wisdom), since the yud is a small point; and so too Chochmah is
The answer is in the same verse: woman was taken “from Ish,” and ish is esh (fire) with the letter yud. The yud, the smallest letter, a mere point, stands for supernal Chochmah, which is a point before it expands.
only the level of a lightning flash that flashes in the mind before it comes to Binah (understanding) and comprehension, in the revelation of the mind; for Binah is the broadening of daas (knowledge) and the expansion of the mind, at length and breadth. And so,
Chochmah is the first flash of insight, like lightning in the mind, before Binah (understanding) grasps and develops it. Binah is the broadening of the mind that works the flash out at length and breadth.
by way of analogy, supernal Binah is the world of delight for the souls, who take delight and pleasure in their intellection and comprehension of the Infinite Light (Or Ein Sof), blessed be He; and this comprehension is called by the name yesh (something), as it is written, “To cause those who love Me to inherit yesh,” and it is called Gan Eden.
Above, supernal Binah is “the world of delight” for the souls, who enjoy grasping the Infinite Light. This grasped comprehension is called yesh, “something,” after the verse “to cause those who love Me to inherit yesh,” and it is Gan Eden.
But “Chochmah from ayin (nothing), etc.” is the level of Eden, the source of the delight; just as no delight is revealed in Chochmah while it is still flashing in the mind, before it is revealed in Binah and comprehension, for then the delight is revealed, whereas in Chochmah the delight is still in its source, hidden. For “Chochmah from ayin, etc.”
Chochmah, which Job’s verse is read to say comes “from ayin (nothing),” is Eden, the source of the delight, rather than the garden where it is enjoyed. Just as an insight still flashing in the mind holds its pleasure hidden until it is understood, so in Chochmah the delight is still concealed in its source.
is the level of actual self-nullification in the Infinite Light, blessed be He. And “with Chochmah He founded the earth”: so that the level of self-nullification is drawn into the source and root of the souls of Israel, and from there it separates and divides into the six hundred thousand souls of Israel, which are the roots of the souls, and in them are branches, etc.,
Chochmah is the level of complete self-nullification (bittul), being nothing before the Infinite Light. Through “with Chochmah He founded the earth,” this bittul is drawn into the root of the souls of Israel, and from there it divides into the six hundred thousand root-souls and their branches.
to draw into them, too, the level of self-nullification, so that they have the nullification of the yesh, in the level of Ishah and lamp (ner). And this is [the meaning of] “the lamp of Havayah”: that is, it is drawn from the level of Havayah that the soul be in the level of a lamp.
So the bittul of Chochmah reaches every soul, enabling it to set aside its yesh, its sense of being something, and to be Ishah and a lamp. This is “the lamp of Havayah”: the soul’s lamp-like yearning is drawn from the level of Havayah.
But how will the drawing-down of supernal Chochmah be in a revealed manner below? It is, by way of analogy, like the drop from the brain of the male, which must first spread through all the limbs, etc.;
The next question is how supernal Chochmah comes to be revealed below. The analogy is the drop of seed, described as coming from the brain of the male, which must first spread through all the limbs.
so there must be an extension and drawing-down of Chochmah through the 248 limbs of the King (ramach evarin deMalka), which are the 248 mitzvos; for the mitzvos are vessels for the Infinite Light, blessed be He, that is enclothed in them,
In the same way Chochmah must spread through “the 248 limbs of the King,” the Tikkunei Zohar’s name for the 248 positive mitzvos. The mitzvos are the vessels in which the Infinite Light is clothed.
like the limbs, which are vessels for the soul and the spirit of life that spreads through them. And it is the mitzvos themselves that draw the level of supernal Chochmah, the level of self-nullification, to the souls of Israel as a whole, so that they be in the level of Ishah and ner, [ner] being numerically 250 (resh-nun).
As the soul’s life spreads through the limbs of the body, so the mitzvos carry supernal Chochmah, the power of bittul, to all the souls of Israel. This makes them Ishah and ner (lamp), and ner has the numerical value 250.
And this is as is written in the Zohar, Parshas Terumah, page 166b: that the 248 mitzvos that are drawn down below are drawn through two levels, right and left: “His left hand is under my head, and his right hand embraces me.”
The Zohar explains that the lamp (ner) is formed when the 248 limbs receive from between two arms, right and left, so that 248 and 2 make 250. The verse “His left hand is under my head, and his right hand embraces me” describes these two arms.
For the flow and drawing-down of the Infinite Light, blessed be He, that is drawn down below is the level of Chesed (kindness), and water, which descends from a high place, etc.
The text identifies the downward flow of the Infinite Light with Chesed (kindness). Like water, kindness naturally descends from a high place to a low one.
But if the drawing-down were drawn down to be below as it is above, the worlds would not be in the level of yesh
Yet if the light came down below exactly as it is above, the worlds could not exist as yesh, an independent “something,” at all.
and a separate thing at all. So there must be the level of tzimtzum (contraction), so that [they] be in the level of yesh, and nevertheless self-nullification be drawn to them; that is, that the self-nullification be from the yesh and separate thing specifically, etc., as is explained elsewhere.
So there must be tzimtzum, a contraction that allows separate existence, and still bittul must reach that existence. The aim is precisely a self-nullification that comes from a “something,” a separate being that sets itself aside.
[And see what is written in Parshas Miketz, at the end of the discourse beginning “HaMagbihi lashaves” (“Who is enthroned on high”): the meaning is “hamagbiha yud” (He who raises the yud), which is the yud that is in the hei; for the dalet is the level of “that which has nothing at all of itself,” [and] it becomes a hei through the yud within it;
In a bracketed aside the Alter Rebbe refers to his discourse in Torah Ohr, Miketz, on “HaMagbihi lashaves” (Psalms 113:5). There hamagbihi is read as “raising the yud”: the hei is formed from a dalet, the level of “that which has nothing at all of itself,” with a small yud inside it.
and this is the level of the mitzvah, by which from tzedek (righteousness) is made tzedakah (charity), etc.; see there. It follows that through the mitzvah the yud is drawn into the dalet, so that it becomes a hei.
That yud is what the mitzvah adds, as tzedek (righteousness) becomes tzedakah (charity) by gaining a hei. So through the mitzvah the yud of Chochmah enters the empty dalet, and it becomes a hei.
Ishah’s power of bittul comes from Ish, esh yud: the self-nullification of supernal Chochmah, which reaches the souls through the 248 mitzvos, the “limbs of the King,” within the bounds of tzimtzum, so that a separate being itself becomes nullified.
The paragraph pairs Binah (yesh, Gan Eden, delight grasped) with Chochmah (ayin, Eden, the hidden source of delight). The Torah Ohr passage referred to adds that this raising of the yud by the mitzvos is an elevation from below upward, while the Torah is a drawing-down from above.

And this is exactly like the matter explained here: that it is the mitzvos themselves that draw the level of supernal Chochmah, the level of esh yud, to the Congregation of Israel, so that they be in the level of esh hei, etc.

And this is [the meaning of] what is said in the Midrash on Song of Songs on the verse “Sustain me with ashishos (flasks)”: “with two fires (ishos)”; and in the Tikkunei Zohar it explains: “two fires, a white fire and a red fire”; and in Tikkun 64 it explains “with ashishos”: “ish and ishah.” And the intent is all one, namely the level of esh yud and esh hei mentioned above.]
Three sources read “Sustain me with ashishos” (Song of Songs 2:5) as two fires: the Midrash, “with two fires”; the Tikkunei Zohar, “a white fire and a red fire”; and Tikkun 64, “ish and ishah.” The Alter Rebbe says they all mean the same pair, esh yud and esh hei, and here the long bracketed aside closes.
The bracketed aside ends by showing that the pair esh yud and esh hei, ish and ishah, appears in the Midrash’s and the Tikkunei Zohar’s readings of “Sustain me with ashishos.”
In the Tikkunei Zohar (39b) the two fires are also “ish and ishah,” where Father and Mother are, yud and hei; they are white and red, mercy and judgment, Chesed and Gevurah, and the beloved asks to be sustained by them.

The hairs above Chochmah ¶6
2. But this glimmer and drawing-forth that is in the level of supernal Chochmah, to draw down in the manner of self-nullification (bittul) below, into the created worlds, shines and is drawn from above, from the Infinite Light (Or Ein Sof), blessed be He, which is far, far above Chochmah.
Section 2 begins. The power of bittul that reaches the created worlds through supernal Chochmah does not start in Chochmah; it shines from the Infinite Light, which is far above Chochmah.
For in order that there be a revelation of the Infinite Light, blessed be He, in Chochmah — even though “He is wise, but not with a known wisdom, etc.” —
Even to be revealed in Chochmah is a descent for the Infinite Light. The Tikkunei Zohar (Pasach Eliyahu) says of G‑d that He is “wise, but not with a known wisdom,” for His wisdom is unlike any wisdom we know.
nevertheless, for there to be a revelation even in this manner, such that it be at all fitting to call [Him] by the name “wise” — after all, the Infinite One (Ein Sof), blessed be He, is as His Name: He has no end and has no, etc., and He is high and exalted, etc. —
Still, for it to be fitting to call Him “wise” at all, there must be a revelation, since the Infinite One is as His Name: without end or limit, high and exalted beyond every attribute.
rather, this drawing-forth, for this revelation to be, is called, by way of analogy, by the name “hairs.” For, as an illustration, the hairs of the head are from the surplus of the brain; their nourishment and their hold are in the brain that is in the head, and nevertheless the main life-force that is in the brain is not drawn into them,
The drawing-forth that makes this revelation possible is called “hairs.” Hair grows from the surplus of the brain and draws on it, but the brain’s essential life does not flow into it.
for if one cuts them there is no pain at all. Rather, this is a drawing-forth from the surplus of the brain, which does not touch the essence and being of the life-force; and even this is nothing
The proof is that cutting hair causes no pain: hair receives only an overflow of the brain’s life, never its essence.
but a small and contracted glimmer through the hollow of the hair, etc. So too, this glimmer and drawing-forth, for the Infinite Light, blessed be He, to be revealed in Chochmah, is in the level of hairs, which has no comparison or relation
Even what reaches the hair is only a small, contracted glimmer passing through its narrow hollow. So too, the light by which the Infinite is revealed in Chochmah is like hair, with no comparison to the essence of the Infinite Light.
to the essence and being of the Infinite Light, blessed be He. And this is the cause that brings about the division of the flow and the drawing-forth into many divisions, into worlds without number, none of which are like one another, for each and every one is distinct from its fellow.
This narrowing, like light passing through separate hairs, is what divides the divine flow into countless worlds, each different from the others. The Kehot notes connect “worlds without number” to the Zohar’s reading of alamos (maidens) as olamos (worlds).
And this is because of the difference in their comprehension of the Infinite Light, blessed be He, that is drawn to them, for the comprehension of one is not like that of its fellow. Therefore they are called “separate intellects,” for their distinctness and division is nothing
The worlds differ by the difference in how each grasps the Infinite Light that reaches it. That is why the spiritual beings are called “separate intellects”: they are distinguished only by what they understand.
but in their intellect and comprehension [for otherwise separation does not apply to them, since it exists only in physicality, which occupies space], in that one is not like its fellow; and so it is in all the worlds, from world to world, etc.
The bracketed note explains why: without bodies that occupy space, nothing else could separate them. The same holds for all the worlds, one after another.
And from there the level of self-nullification is drawn, which is the drawing-forth of the comprehension of the Infinite Light, blessed be He, into the created worlds as well, to each and every one according to its own measure.
From that light above Chochmah comes the bittul that is drawn even into the created worlds, as each comprehends the Infinite Light according to its own capacity. The Aramaic phrase recalls the Zohar’s teaching that G‑d is known to each one according to what he can grasp in his heart.
The bittul that Chochmah carries comes from the Infinite Light above Chochmah, through a contracted channel called “hairs,” and this narrowing divides the flow into countless distinct worlds and intellects, each nullified according to its own grasp.
In the parallel at Likkutei Torah, Sh’lach 46a, the Alter Rebbe adds that this drawing-forth is from the Gulgalta (the skull), above the level of the brain, and that the hairs are what divide the flow into the many different comprehensions of the Infinite; he cites the Rambam’s account of the separate intellects, which differ only in comprehension, having no body or physical place.

Techeles ¶7–8
And this is [the meaning of] “And it shall be to you as tzitzis, and you shall see it”: which refers to the “thread of techeles (sky-blue)” mentioned just before it, in the preceding verse. And “techeles is wool (amra),” which is the level of “and the hair of His head like pure wool,” which is the level of the hairs mentioned above; except
The opening verse’s “and you shall see it” refers back to the “thread of techeles” in the previous verse. The Gemara says techeles is dyed wool (amra), and wool recalls Daniel’s vision of the Ancient of Days, “the hair of His head like pure wool”: the “hairs” just described.
that it is dyed with the color of techeles: for when it is drawn down below it becomes the level of techeles. For that color is from the lower light (nehora tata’ah) that grips the wick: when it consumes some physical thing that it holds onto, such as a wick or wood, the color changes to techeles.
But the tzitzis thread is dyed sky-blue, because when the light of the hairs descends it takes on the color of techeles. This is the color of the lower part of a flame, which clings to the wick and turns blue as it consumes the wick or wood it holds.
The tzitzis’ thread of techeles is wool, the “hairs” of the light above Chochmah, dyed blue: the color the light takes when, like the lower flame on a wick, it grips and consumes a physical thing.
In Daniel’s vision the hair like pure wool belongs to the Ancient of Days (Atik Yomin), which in Kabbalah names a level of Keser (the Crown), above Chochmah.

And so, by way of analogy, [the Sages] said, “Techeles resembles the sea, and the sea [resembles] the sky, and the sky resembles the Throne of Glory,” the level of His Malchus, may He be blessed, which is called “a land that consumes its inhabitants”: for what the worlds receive of their life-force from it is through self-nullification (bittul) and inclusion, in that they take upon themselves the yoke of the Kingship of Heaven, to be nullified and included in their source.
The Sages say techeles resembles the sea, the sea the sky, and the sky the Throne of Glory, which here stands for G‑d’s Malchus. Malchus is called “a land that consumes its inhabitants,” the spies’ phrase, because the worlds receive their life from it only by bittul, taking on the yoke of Heaven’s Kingship and being absorbed into their source.
Whereas to the level of what is separate, and to the sitra achra (the other side), no life-force is drawn from there. (And see [Midrash] Rabbah on Nasso, section 14, at the seventh prince, page 257b: “And He gave a portion of techeles to those who fear Him, for it is like His glory, etc.” See there.)
What remains separate, the sitra achra, receives no life from that source. In parentheses the Alter Rebbe cites the Midrash on the seventh prince’s offering: G‑d “gave a portion of techeles to those who fear Him, for it is like His glory.”
And since the worlds are created in the level of yesh (something), this is like the analogy of the light that grips a physical thing. Therefore this drawing-forth of the extension of the life-force from the level of His Malchus, may He be blessed, to give life to the worlds created from nothing to something, is called by the name techeles,
Because the worlds are created as yesh, a “something,” the life-force of Malchus acts on them like a flame gripping a physical wick. That is why this drawing-forth of life into the worlds created from nothing is called techeles.
which is the drawing-forth of self-nullification, so that the yesh be nullified. (And this is [why] it resembles the Throne of Glory: for a throne is the level of self-nullification, just as the throne is nullified relative to the one who sits on it.)
Techeles is the drawing-forth of bittul, so that the yesh is nullified even as it exists. The parentheses add why techeles resembles the Throne: a throne is nullified before the one seated on it.
And all this is drawn from the level of the hairs, the level of wool (amra), “and the hair of His head like pure wool,” which is the drawing-forth of the Infinite Light (Or Ein Sof), blessed be He, that is far, far above Chochmah, etc., as mentioned above.
All this comes from the “hairs,” the wool of “the hair of His head like pure wool,” which is the drawing-forth of the Infinite Light from far above Chochmah, as explained in section 2.
Techeles, like the Throne it resembles, signifies Malchus, from which the worlds receive life only through bittul; and its source is the “hairs” from above Chochmah.
According to the Kehot notes, in manuscripts 408 and 633, which have the maamar without its glosses, the passage from “the yoke of the Kingship” to “no life-force is drawn from there” is in parentheses, and the parenthesis about the Throne appears there too.

But this drawing-forth depends on the service of Israel below: it is they who draw it down, by an arousal from below (isarusa dilesata), through the deed of the mitzvos that they do below because it is the command of the King. So through this they arouse an arousal from above (isarusa dileila), so that there be
Section 3: this whole drawing-forth depends on Israel’s service below. By doing the mitzvos because they are the King’s command, they make an arousal from below, which calls forth an arousal from above.
a drawing-forth of the Infinite Light (Or Ein Sof), blessed be He, in the level of hairs, drawn in the level of Chochmah to the 248 limbs of the King, which are the mitzvos, that they be vessels and limbs for the level of supernal Chochmah to spread and be enclothed in them, so that in them and through them the revelation be drawn down below, and the mitzvos be bestowers of the revelation of Chochmah.
The arousal from above brings the light of the “hairs” into Chochmah and into the 248 “limbs of the King,” the mitzvos, which become its vessels. Then the mitzvos become givers of revealed Chochmah below.
And this is [the meaning of] “And you shall remember (u’zechartem) all the commandments of Havayah and do them”: that is to say, that you make the mitzvos to be in the level of males (zecharim), who bestow the revelation of Chochmah and the level of self-nullification (bittul), so that there be below the nullification of the yesh, as mentioned above.
This is how the maamar reads “and you shall remember” (u’zechartem): make the mitzvos zecharim, males, who give. They bestow Chochmah and bittul, so that below there is the nullification of the yesh.
But “and you shall not stray after your heart … after which you go astray (zonim), etc.”: harlotry (zenus) is the name for the level of fervor and flashes of a strange fire,
But this requires the warning “do not stray after your heart,” which the verse calls zenus, harlotry. Harlotry here is the fervor and flames of a “strange fire,” passion for what is not G‑d.
like a harlot who is ardent after strangers and turns away from her husband. [The meaning is] that all the pleasures of this world that a person needs to enjoy should be with coolness, and as though he were compelled, etc.
Like an unfaithful wife who is ardent for strangers and turns from her husband, such a person burns for worldly pleasure. Instead, the pleasures a person needs from this world should be taken coolly, as though he were compelled, the Talmud’s phrase (Nedarim 20b) for one who acts “as though a demon compelled him.”
The drawing-forth depends on Israel’s mitzvos, which become “males” that give; this requires guarding the heart from the “strange fire” of passion for worldly pleasure.
The Kehot note records that the Tzemach Tzedek, copying this passage in Or HaTorah, adds that it is somewhat difficult to say that one who is drawn after permitted pleasure should be called a zonah.

And as our Sages, of blessed memory, said, “Their Torah fixed and their work occasional.” The meaning of “occasional” is: merely in a passing way, without any ardor or fervor or warmth of the heart at all, so as not to make it the main thing, etc. And just as the harlot is forbidden to her husband, as it is written, “A man
The Sages praised earlier generations who made “their Torah fixed and their work occasional.” The Alter Rebbe reads “occasional” as without any warmth or passion of the heart, never making worldly work the main thing; then he compares the one who burns for worldly things to the unfaithful wife of the Torah’s sotah passage.

Just as the unfaithful wife is forbidden to her husband, one drawn after a “strange fire” of worldly vanities and pleasures cannot be Ishah, esh hei. Such a person cannot receive from Ish, esh yud, the Chochmah and bittul that come from above.
And as is written in [Midrash] Rabbah on Koheles (page 87a), on the verse “I spoke with my heart”: “The heart strays (sotah), as it is said, ‘Let your heart not turn aside to her ways’ (in Proverbs, chapter 7, [verse] 25); the heart goes astray (zonah), as it is said, ‘And you shall not stray after your heart, etc., after which you go astray.’”
The Midrash on Koheles lists the heart’s traits, among them that “the heart strays” (Proverbs 7:25) and “the heart goes astray” (our verse, “do not stray after your heart”). Straying after the heart is literally called zenus.
And about this it is said, “Turn away from evil and do good”: “good” is the light. That is to say, in order that one’s deeds shine with the Infinite Light (Or Ein Sof), blessed be He, there must first be “turn away from evil,”
Psalms says “Turn away from evil and do good,” and “good” means light. For a person’s deeds to shine with the Infinite Light, he must first turn away from evil.
“and you shall not stray after your heart”: “your heart” specifically, for the heart is of the element of fire. And through this, “so that you remember (tizkeru)”: that we ourselves become the level of males (zecharim), who bestow. [And in this sense [the Sages] said, “Do not read morashah (inheritance), but me’orasah (betrothed)”: for the Torah is the level of a bride, betrothed to the souls of Israel, who are the level of the male (dechar) and the bestower.
The verse says “your heart” specifically because the heart is of the element of fire, where a strange fire can burn; guarding it fulfills “so that you remember” (tizkeru), that we become zecharim, givers. In a bracketed aside, the Sages’ reading of morashah, “inheritance,” as me’orasah, “betrothed,” shows the Torah as a bride betrothed to Israel, who are the male and the giver.
Only one who keeps worldly pleasure cool and “occasional” can be Ishah and receive from Ish; turning from the heart’s strange fire lets one’s deeds shine and makes Israel the giving, male partner.
In Berachos 57a the reading “do not read morashah but me’orashah” comes in the interpretation of dreams; the Alter Rebbe draws from it only that the Torah is betrothed to Israel.

The aside goes on: Jeremiah calls Israel “holy to Havayah, the first of His harvest,” and the Alter Rebbe reads “first” as the source of the Torah. He refers to his explanation elsewhere on a verse beginning “My dove,” and the bracket closes here.

That is: in you and through you the mitzvos will be called by the name “vessels” and “limbs of the King,” so that the Infinite Light (Or Ein Sof), blessed be He, be drawn into them; for on the arousal from below depends the arousal from above.
Returning to “so that you remember”: through Israel the mitzvos become “vessels” and “limbs of the King” in which the Infinite Light is drawn down. The Aramaic principle gives the reason: the arousal from above depends on the arousal from below.
Israel, the “first” and source of the Torah, are those through whom the mitzvos become the vessels of the Infinite Light, since the arousal from above depends on the arousal from below.

The verse goes on “and you shall do them (atem),” which is read, as in the Zohar, as G‑d saying, “I account it to you as though you had made Me.” This depends on “do not stray”: in the separate worlds, whoever desires something becomes Nukva, a receiver, since he receives pleasure from it.
he receives delight from that thing which he desires. Whereas in the world of unity, through being the level of Ishah, esh hei, he becomes the level of the male (dechar); for “their end is wedged in their beginning,” and “last in deed, first in thought.”
But in the world of unity, the one who is Ishah, esh hei, yearning for G‑d, becomes the male (dechar), the giver. The reason is that “their end is wedged in their beginning” and “last in deed, first in thought”: what comes last is rooted highest.
And as our Sages, of blessed memory, said on the verse “Behind and before You formed me”: “behind,” [after] the work of creation. For in the work of creation, Adam, the first man (who was comprised of all the souls),
The Sages read “Behind and before You formed me” of man: “behind” means after all the work of creation. Adam, who included all the souls, was created last.
was created with the last utterance of all the created beings, which is the utterance “Let us make man,” and nevertheless he is the level of “before,” for the souls of Israel arose in thought; and as it is said, “Bereishis (in the beginning): for the sake of Israel, who are called reishis (first).”
Adam came with the final utterance, “Let us make man,” yet he is “before,” because the souls of Israel arose first in G‑d’s thought. So the Sages read “Bereishis”: the world was made for Israel, who are called reishis, “first.”
“And you shall be holy to your G‑d (Elokeichem).” Now, kadosh with a vav is the drawing-down of the supernal Kodesh (holiness); and “kadosh” [is said] three times, until “Havayah Tzevakos.”
The maamar now turns to “and you shall be holy to your G‑d (Elokeichem).” The word kadosh, written with a vav, signifies a drawing-down of the supernal Kodesh (holiness), and the angels’ threefold “kadosh” in Isaiah’s vision draws it down, level by level, until “Havayah Tzevakos.”
“And you shall do them” means that Israel, by not straying after desire, become givers who “make” G‑d’s revelation, for the last-created is rooted first in thought; the paragraph then begins “and you shall be holy.”
The Zohar passage cited in the notes (3:113a) reads “and you shall do them” as written atem, “you,” and says that one who does the mitzvos of the Torah and walks in its ways is, as it were, as though he made Him above.

And the drawing-down of this holiness is the level of hairs, as mentioned above; for this is the concept of holiness, as it is written concerning the nazirite, “He shall be holy; he shall let the locks of the hair of his head grow.” And the drawing-forth of the level of hairs mentioned above comes through the arousal from below (isarusa dilesata), as mentioned above.
Drawing down holiness is the level of “hairs”: the Torah calls the nazirite “holy” for letting his hair grow. And the drawing-down of the “hairs” comes through the arousal from below.

And this is [the meaning of] “And you shall be holy”: that you will draw this holiness “to your G‑d (Elokeichem),” meaning, to the level of G‑dliness that rests in you, which is the level of His Malchus, may He be blessed; and as it is written, “You shall surely set a king over you, etc.,”
So “you shall be holy to your G‑d” means: you will draw this holiness to Elokeichem, the G‑dliness that rests within you, which is G‑d’s Malchus. That is the kingship meant by “You shall surely set a king over you.”

which is the level of the lower unity (yichuda tata’ah), the level of the nullification of the yesh, like “And we bow and prostrate ourselves and give thanks,” and like “And the host of heaven bow to You”; for even their level of self-nullification is called yesh: there is someone who is nullified, etc.
Accepting the King is the “lower unity” (yichuda tata’ah), the nullification of the yesh, as in Aleinu, “we bow and prostrate ourselves and give thanks,” and “the host of heaven bow to You.” Yet even this bittul is a “something”: there is still someone who bows.

Whereas the higher unity (yichuda ila’ah) is the level of the self-nullification of supernal Chochmah, and “Chochmah from ayin, etc.”: actual self-nullification in the Infinite Light (Or Ein Sof), blessed be He, which does not occupy any place at all, in absolute truth; as in the matter of “And what are we, etc.”
The “higher unity” (yichuda ila’ah) is the bittul of supernal Chochmah, “from ayin,” where one is truly nothing and occupies no place at all before the Infinite Light. Moshe and Aharon expressed it in “and what are we?”, and with this the maamar ends.
Holiness from the “hairs” above is drawn by Israel’s service into Malchus, the G‑dliness within them; this is the lower unity, a bittul in which one still exists, which the maamar contrasts with the higher unity of Chochmah, in which one is nothing at all.

In one’s avodah
Do the mitzvos because they are the King’s command, for through them the light above is drawn down. Take the pleasures this world requires coolly, as though compelled, keeping Torah fixed and work occasional, and turn the heart away from the “strange fire” of worldly passion; then one’s deeds shine with the Infinite Light and one becomes a giver who draws holiness into the world.
Questions for discussion
- Why does the maamar read ishah as esh hei and ish as esh yud, and what does each fire represent?
- How can the mitzvos, done in a world of tzimtzum, bring a self-nullification that comes from a separate “something”?
- Why is the light above Chochmah compared to hair, and how does this explain the variety of worlds and intellects?
- What makes worldly passion a “strange fire” that prevents a person from being Ishah, and how does the maamar say pleasure should be taken?
- How do the lower unity and the higher unity differ, and where does each come from?
