Gevuros de’Abba

The Gevuros of Abba (gevuros de’Abba)

Restraint and division within Chochmah (Abba): sweetened gevuros contained in bittul, which, drawn into Imma, become her chasadim; the root of salt and techeles, giving power to refine and to bring bittul inward.

Where it’s explained

  1. Likkutei Torah, Vayikra 4, ¶1Salt comes from water (Chesed in Chochmah) burned by the sun, so it is gevuros and sharp; it has no taste of its own yet gives taste, since tastes come from Chochmah and what is gevuros relative to Abba is chasadim relative to Imma. Flesh is rooted in Binah, so salt sweetens it; and it draws out the blood, for “through Chochmah they are refined.” Its root is the butzina dekardinusa, the measuring line, which is the Gevurah of Atik clothed in the mocha setima’ah.
  2. Likkutei Torah, Bechukosai 3, ¶7The Torah was given in five voices, the five chasadim that make things grow, which are the five Gevuros of Abba become chasadim of Imma. Moshe, from the light of Abba itself, heard it all in one voice; Israel could not receive that, so it was divided by the five Gevuros of Abba into five voices, gevuros that are truly “full of water,” chasadim that can be received.
  3. Likkutei Torah, Behaaloscha 3, ¶9Fervor that remains contained within bittul, within ayin, is the Gevuros of Abba. The fervor born of refining the flesh is the Gevuros of Imma or of Zeir Anpin: a yesh, a fervor that is felt, lower than the complete bittul of Moshe (Mah).
  4. Likkutei Torah, Shelach 13, ¶9For bittul to reach inward into the place of yesh, into “the inner man and the deep heart,” is specifically through the Gevuros of Abba, rooted in the hidden Chochmah in which the Gevurah of Atik is clothed (the Ramaz). Techeles and salt both come from them, for there are many levels within the Gevuros of Abba (Sh’lach 13:15).
  5. Likkutei Torah, Korach 1, ¶35The Gevuros of Abba are sweetened gevuros, “the fear of G‑d is for life,” and the light of Abba repels the external forces. The Levites, by contrast, are the Gevuros of Imma, holy and arousing song and longing, yet since judgments are aroused from Binah they needed “pass a razor.”
