Training, dedication (chinuch)
Training and dedication: a beginning needs an extra gift or light beyond the regular order, as a child is coaxed to learn; so the altar and Temple were dedicated with added, encompassing lights.
The word In plain Hebrew chinuch is the education of a child. In these maamarim it also names the dedication (chanukah) of the altar and the Temple, explained through that sense: a first, extra drawing of light that makes the regular order possible.
Where it’s explained
- Likkutei Torah, Nasso 7, ¶16A child is trained to learn not through the learning alone, which he has constantly, but through some addition, a drawing-near or a gift; once trained, the regular thing suffices, for all beginnings are hard. So “Give to G‑d honor (kavod)” comes before the seven voices: kavod is an encompassing, extra illumination drawn first so that the descent can follow, as a gift is given in honor of bride and groom for a new union.
- Likkutei Torah, Nasso 7, ¶17The princes brought silver bowls and offered incense on the outer altar, which was not the regular order, like the extra gift that trains a child. The incense drew down makifim, the kavod, so that afterward the daily offerings could proceed in order: this is the chinuch of the altar.
- Torah Ohr, Vayeishev 4, ¶37One trains a youth because he is far from what he is to learn, and the training is with many gifts (Vayeshev 4:34–35). All the life spread through the worlds is a “youth,” “small” relative to Ein Sof (4:35–36); to draw Or Ein Sof itself into the daily offerings the altar was too small to hold it, so the princes gave many gifts to train it.
- Likkutei Torah, Vezos Haberachah 5, ¶9Before the Shechinah rested in the Beis HaMikdash, David and Shlomo made its dedication, from the word chinuch: offerings beyond the daily ones. That means additional supernal lights came down with the revelation of the Shechinah, not the Shechinah alone.
- Likkutei Torah, Vezos Haberachah 6, ¶10The dedication of the Temple draws from an encompassing of the encompassing, above will, the level of Keser. Mitzvos are rooted in the supernal will, so joy belongs to them; a house and its walls, inanimate, are rooted above will, where joy does not apply, so joy had to be drawn there: hence a feast and rejoicing at the dedication of a house.
Stated differently
Why training in youth (“train a youth according to his way”) lasts into old age
The youth, given at birth a soul from the side of the pure animal (6:2), is trained first in the bittul of the “animal,” the angels, above reason and knowledge; this sets bittul in his soul, so that even when old and wise he does not leave the bittul that is above intellect.
The days of youth are mochin dekatnus compared with old age, but iskafya then, when his strength and blood are boiling, draws from a very high level, and that illumination stays with him even when he grows old.
