Rapach nitzotzin
The 288 sparks (rapach nitzotzin)
Sparks of Tohu that fell when its vessels shattered, 288 as they were in Atzilus; enclothed in nogah, they give physical things life, and refining them all is the purpose of exile.
The word ניצוץ also names a spark in other senses (the G‑dly spark in a soul, a spark of Moshe in every Jew). It is this concept when the text speaks of רפ״ח, שבירת הכלים, תהו, נוגה, or בירור; the related entry birur treats the process of refining them.
Where it’s explained
- Torah Ohr, Vayeishev 2, ¶11The number 288 (the “rapach meis,” 288 died, that the previous paragraph reads in “merachefes”) is the division of the fallen sparks as they still were in Atzilus, the start of their descent. Falling into Beriah each divided into very many parts, and further in Yetzirah and Asiyah into thousands and myriads.
- Torah Ohr, Vayeishev 2, ¶12The whole purpose of exile is to refine the 288 sparks, and when the refinements are complete Mashiach will come. The exile is long because 288 is their number in Atzilus, matched to the 600,000 general souls; below, both the souls and the sparks have multiplied into countless small parts.
- Likkutei Torah, Shelach 2, ¶4Through the shattering of the primordial kings of Tohu, 288 sparks fell and were enclothed in nogah, mixed of good and evil. The negative commandments separate the good from the evil; the positive ones, done with physical things such as an esrog or the wool of tzitzis, draw Or Ein Sof into the refined good, which is included in it.
- Likkutei Torah, Vaeschanan 12, ¶6All the life of physical things is from the 288 sparks that fell in the shattering. The Name Ban, Malchus, raises them as mayin nukvin to the large ayin of Shema, the source of the attributes, from which they were drawn; Ban (52) with the 288 makes shem (340).
- Likkutei Torah, Shelach 1, ¶1“The utterance of G‑d’s mouth” within minerals, plants and animals is the 288 sparks fallen in the shattering of the vessels. Man is from Tikkun, and the root of the 288 sparks is very lofty, so man must receive his life from them, from bread.
Stated differently
Whether the 288 sparks themselves are raised chiefly through the deed of the mitzvos or through Torah study
Torah study also refines the 288, but the essential raising of the 288 sparks is through deed; so through Torah Keser is drawn to Zeir Anpin, and to Malchus only through practical mitzvos. (The paragraph before says the Torah, Chochmah, refines the deed of the mitzvos but does not hold the substance of the sparks.)
The return of the sparks that fell in the shattering into the realm of the seventy is done specifically through Torah study, which rules pure and impure; the Shema and the Amidah raise them, but the main refinement is through Torah, “for through Chochmah they are refined.”
