Hod
הוד
Hod (splendor, acknowledgment)
The Sefirah below Gevurah on the left line, its branch, and Netzach’s partner: acknowledgment (hodaah) from afar of what one does not truly grasp. Like Netzach it is “outside the body,” yet rooted in Keser.
The word הוד also means splendor or radiance: in הוד והדר, זיו והוד and הודו על ארץ ושמים it is G‑d’s glory or a mere ray of His light, not the Sefirah. It shares its root with הודאה and מודים (acknowledgment), which the text links to the Sefirah (היכל ההוד שהוא בחינת הודאה). The Sefirah is meant in נו״ה, נה״י, איהי בהוד, היכל ההוד, and beside נצח.
Where it’s explained
- Likkutei Torah, Masei 3, ¶23Hod, the branch of awe, is acknowledgment from afar: admitting a thing without truly grasping it, whereas Gevurah is awe from nearness, drawn from grasping His exaltedness (Masei 3:22). Gevurah also has its Netzach: accepting the yoke of Heaven by resolve before awe is felt. In man too, Netzach and Hod have a very high root, as in “for it is a stiff-necked people, and You will forgive.”
- Likkutei Torah, Sukkos 4, ¶5Kneeling, which the Zohar places in the chamber of Hod, is acknowledgment: one admits in his heart that there is none besides Him, yet his will is not wholly nullified, so he bends the knees, which are outside the body, while the body stays standing. Prostration, bending the head where Daas is, is the full nullification of the will. Blessing is above acknowledgment: on weekdays Malchus is in Hod, on Friday night also in Netzach.
- Likkutei Torah, Vaeschanan 5, ¶12Malchus of Atzilus is called emunah: the lower unity receives the truth of the higher unity (Daas) by faith, believing what it does not see; this is “she is in Hod.” So Yehoshua, the face of the moon, received from Moshe (Daas, the sun) specifically through Hod (“put of your hod upon him”); acknowledgment admits that the truth is as it is before Him, though it is not actually revealed.
- Likkutei Torah, Shir HaShirim 21, ¶16The two loaves are in Netzach and Hod: the Oral Torah is “she in Hod,” as the blessing over bread from the earth opens with “Nodeh lecha,” acknowledgment; the Written Torah is “he in Netzach,” as the blessing Moshe instituted over bread from heaven.
- Torah Ohr, Vayishlach 6, ¶5Bittul begins in Chochmah, Binah and Daas; the middos, love and awe aroused by contemplation, are not bittul itself; Netzach and Hod are a still greater descent, only an extension from oneself to another, bringing it into actual deed: teaching others or giving charity.
Stated differently
Whose branch Hod is: Gevurah or Binah
As Netzach is the branch of Chesed, Hod is called the branch of Gevurah on the left line.
Hod is the branch of Gevurah: Gevurah is awe that comes from nearness, through grasping His exaltedness, while acknowledgment is from afar.
Offered with Netzach as the branch of Chochmah (sight, from which come prostration and bittul): Hod is the branch of Binah, which is hearing.
Whether Netzach and Hod are among the essential middos or only their bestowal outside the body
Chesed, Gevurah and Tiferes are the middos themselves, lit by the reasoning of the intellect; Netzach, Hod and Yesod are the middos’ bestowal to another, so they are called “outside the body.” In Netzach and Hod one prevails to carry out the middah after its reason has gone.
The five middos of the verse “Yours, Havayah, is the greatness, the might, the glory, the victory and the splendor (hod)” are the essential middos; the sixth, “for all” (Yesod), is the bestowal that includes the five.
