Memutza

Intermediary (memutza)

A connecting level between two that cannot meet directly, which joins them and carries the flow from one to the other, as Keser stands between the Emanator and the emanated.

Where it’s explained

  1. Likkutei Torah, Rosh Hashanah 3, ¶18The rule for every intermediary: it has something of each side, and so it can join them and bring the flow down from one to the other. Keser has the lowest level of the Emanator and is also the root of the emanated; the first is far higher than the second.
  2. Likkutei Torah, Shir HaShirim 8, ¶3The Essence of the Emanator is beyond all worlds, and even its Or comes into revelation, in Atzilus too, only through an intermediary, Keser. Because Keser holds the last level of the Emanator it is sometimes called Or Ein Sof and not counted among the ten Sefiros; because it holds the root of the emanated it is counted.
  3. Likkutei Torah, Shir HaShirim 8, ¶10The same holds between worlds: the flow from the Sefiros of Atzilus to those of Beriah, Yetzirah and Asiyah passes through Malchus of Atzilus, which becomes Atik of Beriah. So Malchus has two aspects, within Atzilus and as the source of time in Beriah.
  4. Likkutei Torah, Shemini Atzeres 2, ¶1Finite created worlds could come from the Infinite only after a chain of intermediaries without number. The lower Gan Eden, between the spiritual worlds and the physical world, is an example: it includes both above and below.
  5. Torah Ohr, Vaeira 5, ¶6In the soul: the throat is the intermediary that joins the mind to the heart and causes intellect to be turned into an emotion. In it the flow is no longer intellect and not yet emotion.

Stated differently

Whether an intermediary has something of both sides, is neither of them, or joins them by something above both

Likkutei Torah, Bamidbar 14, ¶4

Citing Etz Chaim: the intermediary includes both of the levels it mediates between; so Keser has the lowest level of the Emanator and the root of all the emanated.

Torah Ohr, Vaeira 5, ¶6

The throat, the intermediary between intellect and emotion, is neither the essence of intellect nor the essence of emotion: the flow there has left the mind and has not yet become an emotion.

Likkutei Torah, Matos 6, ¶6

Tzimtzum and expansion are two opposites; the intermediary that joins them is a level above both, a drawing from the Or Ein Sof before whom darkness and light are alike (so also Torah Ohr, Miketz 15:18, of Yaakov as the intermediary between the Avos).

Which part of Keser is the lowest level of the Emanator and which is the root of the emanated

Likkutei Torah, Reeh 3, ¶4

Atik is the last level of the Emanator, and Arich Anpin is the root of the emanated (so also Bechukotai 2:16, in the name of the Arizal).

Torah Ohr, Toldos 3, ¶26

The lowest level of the Emanator in Keser is the first three Sefiros of Arich Anpin, and the root of the emanated is its seven lower Sefiros.

Likkutei Torah, Rosh Hashanah 3, ¶18

The lowest level of the Emanator is Chochmah and Binah of Arich Anpin; the root of the emanated is the seven lower Sefiros of Arich Anpin, which clothe themselves in Atzilus.
