Akudim

Akudim, Nekudim and Berudim (the bound, the points, and the dappled)

Three stages of the ten sefiros named in Etz Chaim: Akudim, all ten bound in one vessel without division; Nekudim, ten separate points (the world of Tohu); Berudim, the partzufim of Tikkun.

The word עקודים, נקודים and ברודים are first the ringed, speckled and dappled flocks of Yaakov and Lavan (Bereishis 30–31), and Torah Ohr reads those verses as these levels. Nekudim/nekudos also means the vowel points (in טנת״א: te’amim, nekudos, tagin, osiyos).

Where it’s explained

  1. Torah Ohr, Noach 4, ¶6Citing Etz Chaim: in Akudim all ten sefiros are bound in one vessel with no division at all; in Nekudim they divided into ten points; Berudim is the world of Tikkun, partzufim. Akudim, their root, is far above Chochmah and Binah of Atzilus, and is what the Pardes calls the ten sefiros hidden in their Emanator, “You are wise, but not with a known wisdom.”
  2. Torah Ohr, Noach 4, ¶10Nekudim is a great descent from Akudim. In Akudim, drawing Chochmah draws all ten hidden sefiros together as one thing; in Nekudim Chochmah is drawn alone, a “known wisdom.” A single sefirah on its own bears no comparison to the whole, like one letter taken out of a word.
  3. Torah Ohr, Toldos 3, ¶24Nekudim is from Chochmah, where division applies; Akudim is from Keser, above division. So the middos above intellect (ahavah rabbah, present in every soul) are all included together, unlike middos born of intellect, which branch apart from each other.
  4. Torah Ohr, Beshalach 8, ¶22The inter-inclusion of Akudim is not that of Tikkun (Berudim, many vessels in separate lines), which comes from bittul as the mochin weaken the middos. In Akudim the middos stay at full strength and are still united, through the revelation in them of Or Ein Sof, “the perfection of all.” The manna was rooted in Akudim.
  5. Likkutei Torah, Emor 6, ¶9In the world of Akudim the light was surely greater than in Nekudim, yet there was no shattering of the vessels, because their closeness to Or Ein Sof gave them true bittul and inter-inclusion, “bound in one vessel.” From this bittul something is drawn afterwards into the world of Tikkun through the indwelling of Or Ein Sof.

Stated differently

Which “Adam” Akudim is called: Adam of Yetzirah (with Adam Kadmon as Adam of Beriah), or Adam of Beriah relative to Ein Sof

Likkutei Torah, Behar 3, ¶7

Following Etz Chaim: Adam Kadmon is called Adam of Beriah, the world of Akudim Adam of Yetzirah, and Atzilus Adam of Asiyah. Adam Kadmon is above Akudim, for Akudim are actual ten sefiros, only bound in one vessel.

Likkutei Torah, Masei 8, ¶1

Adam Kadmon is called Adam of Beriah; Akudim and Nekudim, or Atik Yomin and Arich Anpin, are called Adam of Yetzirah; Atzilus as a whole is Adam of Asiyah.

Torah Ohr, Noach 4, ¶10

Or Ein Sof itself is far above Akudim, for even Akudim is called Adam of Beriah relative to Ein Sof.

Whether Akudim has a vessel (all ten in one vessel) or is above enclothement in vessels

Likkutei Torah, Behar 3, ¶7

Akudim are actual ten sefiros, only bound in one vessel.

Torah Ohr, Terumah 2, ¶6

The practical mitzvos of the souls from Binyamin draw from Akudim, which is above enclothement in vessels, for vessels apply only in Atzilus. In Tohu, too, the lights were above enclothement in vessels, but there the vessels shattered; not so in Akudim.

Likkutei Torah, Eikev 2, ¶3

The dew that brought the manna is drawn from lights above the vessels, so it is above Tohu and Tikkun, like Akudim, which is above Nekudim.

Whether Akudim is named together with Tohu, or set above both Tohu and Tikkun

Torah Ohr, Mikeitz 12, ¶15

From Tohu itself Tikkun is made: from Akudim [and] Nekudim, Berudim is made.

Likkutei Torah, Reeh 3, ¶9

The power of G‑d hidden in a trial brings to knowledge because it is from the 288 sparks of the world of Tohu, “Akudim, Nekudim,” and SaG is superior to Mah.

Torah Ohr, Noach 4, ¶15

Akudim, bound in one vessel, is a very high level, above the world of Tohu and the world of Tikkun.

Likkutei Torah, Emor 6, ¶7

Light drawn from Akudim in one vessel is “the perfection of all,” above Tohu: the world of Tohu is Nekudim, and the world of Akudim is te’amim, which are in Keser, while the points are in Chochmah.
