Or Ein Sof
The Infinite Light (Or Ein Sof)
The boundless light radiating from G‑d’s Essence like sunlight from the sun: His “Name,” a revelation, not the Essence. Chiefly the light before the tzimtzum; also that light as clothed in the sefiros.
Where it’s explained
- Torah Ohr, Vayeira 1, ¶14“Before the world was created there was He and His Name alone”: He is Ein Sof Himself, and His Name is the Or Ein Sof within Him, the revelation that can spread out, like the sun’s radiance beside the body of the sun. The light is the revelation; Ein Sof Himself is the luminary (ma’or), its source.
- Likkutei Torah, Pekudei 2, ¶22Why “without end” and not “without beginning”: the name Ein Sof does not describe His Essence but His Name, a light drawn from the luminary by His will. Before creation it was included in the luminary as utter nothing; then it was drawn out as radiance, and in it the tzimtzum took place and the kav was drawn.
- Torah Ohr, Vayeira 1, ¶15The tzimtzum was in the Or Ein Sof, not in the luminary: because the worlds could not receive the light as it is, it was gathered back into the luminary, present only in potential, like a soul’s power to enliven before it enters a body.
- Likkutei Torah, Chukas 2, ¶35Or Ein Sof means, by analogy, light and radiance drawn from Him. Keser (Atik and Arich), emanated from it like letters engraved in a gem, is also called Ein Sof and is above Atzilus, yet beside the Or Ein Sof itself, which no thought can grasp, Keser is called darkness.
- Likkutei Torah, Shir HaShirim 37, ¶14The term is also used for the light after it is clothed: the Shema draws the Or Ein Sof into the ten sefiros, covered within the vessels of Atzilus (the hand tefillin); the Amidah, through nullification, draws a revelation of Or Ein Sof above the ten sefiros of Atzilus (the head tefillin).
Stated differently
Whether the name Ein Sof is said of His Essence (the luminary) or only of the light, His Name
The light is called Or Ein Sof, and Ein Sof Himself is the luminary, the source from which the light is drawn.
What we call Ein Sof is not meant to describe His Essence, for which silence is praise, but His Name, which has no end.
Anochi” (“I who am I”), above even sovev, is the essence of Or Ein Sof, from which the Name Havayah is drawn.
Whether the radiance that gives life to the worlds is itself what is called Or Ein Sof
The spreading of radiance from His Malchus is only a radiance and is called Or Ein Sof and the radiance of the Shechinah; so too the life that spreads to bring the upper and lower worlds into being is only a radiance.
It is not the Or Ein Sof itself that is clothed in the worlds to give them life and bring them into being, but only a radiance from His Name.
Sefer HaErchim Chabad
The term “Or Ein Sof” refers to the light before the tzimtzum, spreading from His Essence. It is called “light” because its relation to His Essence, and the way it is drawn from Him, is in general like that of sunlight to the sun. (our translation)
