Milui

The filling, or spelling-out, of a letter (milui)

The letters that spell out a letter’s name (ה as ה״ה or ה״א): the power hidden in the letter brought out into revelation below; one needs it to say a letter, not to write it.

The word מילוי also means filling or fulfilment: the seven days of the Miluim, explained in Tzav 5 as filling the lack, or the fulfilment of a will. The term here is the spelled-out letters of a letter or Name; the Names Ab, Sag, Mah and Ban are four such spellings of Havayah (see mah-and-ban).

Where it’s explained

  1. Torah Ohr, Chayei Sarah 1, ¶10The expansion of the first hei cannot be revealed below as it is above; it is drawn down as another hei, the milui of the hei, the power of the hei that was hidden above. The milui is always what was hidden, coming out below into revelation.
  2. Likkutei Torah, Shemini Atzeres 8, ¶18All light is drawn down through the final hei of Havayah, which has a milui. A written letter is grasped from the letter itself; to say it one needs its milui. So the Land of Israel receives a festival’s light in one day and the Diaspora needs two.
  3. Likkutei Torah, Rosh Hashanah 3, ¶20The milui is how influence is drawn down from the Name Havayah below. It is called ko’ach, the hidden power above revelation (sovev), because spreading downward needs a higher power.
  4. Likkutei Torah, Tzav 7, ¶33The milui of hei is itself a hei, so it is called the Machpelah, the doubled. The milui is the concealed within the hei; that concealment within Malchus is rooted in Keser, for their beginning is wedged in their end.
  5. Torah Ohr, Bereishis 8, ¶12The Oral Torah brings what is hidden in the Written Torah into detailed revelation, and so it is called Chavah: its number, 19, is the number of the milui letters of Havayah, and the milui is the revealing of what is hidden.

Stated differently

Whether the milui is ranked below the letter’s own essence or as the concealed within it, rooted in Keser

Likkutei Torah, Vezos Haberachah 6, ¶15

The milui of the hei is the lowest level in Malchus, which descends into Beriah, Yetzirah and Asiyah; it is called the handmaid, as against the essence of Malchus.

Torah Ohr, Chayei Sarah 1, ¶11

Now we receive through the doubling, the milui of the hei’s; in the Time to Come there will be no doubling, but the hei itself, as it is above, will be revealed below.

Likkutei Torah, Tzav 7, ¶33

The milui is the concealed within the hei itself, and that concealment within Malchus is rooted in Keser.

What “ko’ach” (כ״ח) denotes in relation to the milui

Likkutei Torah, Rosh Hashanah 3, ¶20

Ko’ach is the milui of the Name Havayah.

Likkutei Torah, Shemini Atzeres 8, ¶22

Ko’ach is the 28 letters of the milui of the milui of the Name.
