- אשה כי תזריע וילדה זכר כו׳ “When a Woman Emits Seed and Gives Birth to a Male” Every attribute contains its opposite, and union comes about through what each partner holds of the other: the father gives from the Gevurah within his Chesed, the mother from the Chesed within her Gevurah. So when the woman’s seed comes first, the bestowal that leads is Chesed and the child is male, just as the verse says: “When a woman emits seed and gives birth to a male.”
- עולם לאכסדרה הוא דומה ורוח צפונית אינה מסובבת… “The World Is Like an Exedra” The Talmud’s picture of a world left open on its north side reflects the inter-inclusion of Chesed and Gevurah: the south, which is Chesed, burns with the concentrated heat of Gevurah, while the north, which is Gevurah, holds the cold and the water of Chesed; this blending of opposites is the tikkun that lets the world endure.
- שוש תשיש ותגל העקרה בקבוץ בניה לתוכה בשמחה “May the Barren One Greatly Rejoice” When the Community of Israel’s love is awakened only from above, she is called “barren” and bears only the lesser love, which wants G‑d for its own sake. But the joy of a mitzvah arouses a supernal joy that draws light from G‑d’s essence beyond all measure, so that even then a “male” is born: great love, which wants G‑d Himself and not even Gan Eden.
- וביום השמיני ימול וגו׳ “And on the Eighth Day He Shall Be Circumcised” Shabbos, the seventh day, is G‑d’s answer to human effort, a light from Atzilus proportioned to the week’s refinement; circumcision on the eighth day draws from Adam Kadmon, “the Will of all wills,” a gift beyond the reach of any effort. That is why circumcision overrides Shabbos, and why the harp of Moshiach will have eight strings.
- אדם כי יהיה בעור בשרו “When a Man Shall Have in the Skin of His Flesh” Nega’im, the Torah’s skin afflictions, are not ordinary impurity but supernal lights, harsh judgments of holiness: they appear only on adam, the complete person who has refined everything within him except the outermost dross, and through the kohen, who embodies supernal Chesed, they can be sweetened into complete good.
- בגמרא דב״מ פרק הפועלים קא מפלגי במתיבתא דרקיע… In the Gemara, Bava Metzia, chapter HaPoalim: “They were disputing in the Academy of the Firmament…” G‑d is “the Holy One, blessed be He”: “holy,” the encompassing light of Keser, and “blessed,” the indwelling light of Chochmah. The Academy of the Firmament, whose understanding comes from Binah, heard G‑d’s ruling “pure” only as a hidden glimmer of the encompassing light, while Rabbah bar Nachmani, whose soul came from that very radiance, could find its reason in the Torah itself.
