Die Maamarim 4
- האזינו השמים ואדברה ותשמע הארץ אמרי פי יערוף… “Give ear, O heavens, and I will speak; and let the earth hear the words of my mouth” Israel asked G‑d to come “like the rain,” a love drawn down by our own teshuvah and effort; G‑d answered “I will be like the dew,” a love from above the soul’s very root that no deed below can reach. Teshuvah, the soul’s return to its source beyond Havayah, brings the rain, and once the rain has come the dew follows of itself.
- האזינו השמים ואדברה ותשמע הארץ כו׳ יערוף כמטר… Give ear, O heavens Heaven and earth, the Written and the Oral Torah, are witnesses to Israel because Israel clothe G‑d in the Torah: every mitzvah, and every word learned for its own sake, draws the Infinite Light into a wisdom that on its own is beyond grasp. The power to do this comes from prayer, from the self-sacrifice of the Shema and the uniting of the soul’s two hearts, after which Torah learned for practice falls on the soul like rain and gives it the strength to love G‑d.
- בעז״ה Give Ear, O Heavens Moshe’s call to heaven and earth is a call to two kinds of souls, and the Torah he likens to rain and dew is how both draw G‑d down. Rain is Torah that rises from below and must fall on soil plowed by a broken heart, so that the animal soul, rooted higher than the G‑dly soul, cries out with a “great noise” and makes salvations sprout; dew is Torah for its own sake, which comes from above.
- כנשר יעיר קנו על גוזליו ירחף As an Eagle Rouses Its Nest The soul, a portion of Havayah, follows the transient body into a spiritual desert and, through negligence, loses its G‑dly spark to the other side. G‑d’s answer is the eagle: compassion that rouses and hovers in the pleas before the Shema, and the deeper teshuvah “out of the depths” in the Shema, and above all on Yom Kippur, which lifts the soul above its sins to G‑d alone.
