Die Maamarim 4
- היום הזה הוי״ה אלהיך מצוך לעשות את החוקים… “This Day Havayah Your G‑d Commands You” The covenant over the Torah is renewed every year before Rosh HaShanah, when G‑d’s will and kingship are revealed as in the Oral Torah; through awe, the sense of distance in the Ten Days and the removal of the heart’s “foreskin,” a Jew’s inner love comes out until Yom Kippur brings him “before Havayah.” Serving G‑d with both hearts and both souls, in Torah thought and speech, “causes” G‑d to say “Let us make man in our image.”
- ענין ראש השנה ויום הכפורים The Matter of Rosh HaShanah and Yom Kippur On Rosh HaShanah Nukva receives her intellect directly from Binah, so the day calls for awe and self-nullification before the King, while the Ten Days of Teshuvah reveal love through distance and “saw” Z’eir Anpin and Nukva apart so that they come face to face, leading to the hidden love of Yom Kippur. Through the speech of Torah and prayer, Israel “causes Havayah to say” anew, “Let us make man.”
- תחת אשר לא עבדת את ה׳ אלקיך בשמחה וגו׳ “Because you did not serve Havayah your G‑d with joy” Every Jew can serve G‑d with joy, because the Torah is G‑d’s own light: studying it quenches the longing to cleave to Him that is hidden in every heart. That joy is open even to one who has fallen from love, and it grows as he recognizes his own lowliness.
- ויקרא משה אל כל ישראל ויאמר אליהם אתם… “And Moshe Called to All Israel” What a person reaches by his own effort is real, but the “pure heart,” a lofty awe and love that binds his innermost will to G‑d, can only be given from above, when G‑d turns a “shining face” toward him. The Ten Days of Teshuvah are that time, and their fasts prepare a person to receive it.
