- לבאר ענין יו״כ To explain the matter of Yom Kippur Neglecting a positive commandment dims only the “revealed world” (vav-hei), the love a person kindles from below, which teshuvah itself rekindles; violating a prohibition blocks the “hidden world” (yud-hei), the love given from above, which only the inner dimension of G‑d’s will, revealed on Yom Kippur, can restore. So Yom Kippur is “Shabbos Shabbason … for you”: higher than the face-to-face turning of Shabbos, and revealed below in the source of the souls of Israel.
- שבת שבתון הוא לכם ועניתם את נפשותיכם בתשעה… “It is a Shabbos of complete rest (Shabbos Shabbason) for you, and you shall afflict your souls” The soul descends from “pure,” its root in divine thought, so that through the mitzvos, done as the King’s command, it rises to “holy” (kodesh), the light that encompasses all worlds. Sin is repaired only from the Holy of Holies, G‑d’s essence beyond even that light, which the Kohen Gadol draws down on Yom Kippur: when Israel draw it by their own service, refining the soul’s nine attributes, the day is Shabbos Shabbason hu and atones even for Chochmah; when it comes from above alone, it is hi, an eternal statute that atones for Binah.
- ביאור מעט ע״פ שבת שבתון כו׳ A brief explanation of “A Shabbos of complete rest” (Shabbos Shabbason) The soul descends from “pure” to rise to “holy”: on Shabbos, through the yoke of Heaven, Malchus and the souls rise to the supernal kodesh, Chochmah. Yom Kippur, “Shabbos Shabbason,” draws from the Holy of Holies, the source of Chochmah, and so it can make good every blemish; when Israel’s arousal from below is fitting, the very essence of the Infinite Light shines through, and the day is “Shabbos Shabbason hu.”
