I maamarim 8

  1. ויהי בשלח פרעה את העם ולא נחם אלהים… “And it came to pass, when Pharaoh sent the people away” The exile is a sowing: as a seed rots in the earth before it grows, the Jewish people in exile raise the divine sparks hidden in the world, and the light that comes out of that darkness brings more light and joy than revealed light can. That joy must be reached by the long way, through self-reckoning and the yoke of Heaven, not by the short road of unbounded joy. Maamar 1.18 paragrafi~50 min139 fontiInglese
  2. וירא ישראל את היד הגדולה אשר עשה הוי״ה… “And Israel saw the great hand” There are two levels of the Name Havayah: a lower one that brings the worlds into being and can be grasped, so awe applies to it, and a higher one, G‑d’s will for the worlds, which is hidden and can only be believed in. Through Moshe, who joins the two, and through a person’s self-nullifying service, the hidden higher level is revealed, as it was at the splitting of the Sea and will be fully in the Time to Come. Maamar 2.14 paragrafi~20 min58 fontiInglese
  3. אז ישיר משה ובני ישראל את השירה הזאת… “Then Moshe and the Children of Israel sang” Before G‑d’s Essence, “exalted over exalted,” the hidden world and the revealed world are equal, so at the sea even the letters of speech, the source of the revealed world, were raised into the hidden “sea.” Prayer and song bring this into a person: the blessing draws the hidden into the open, and the Levites’ song rises to G‑d beyond all worlds. Maamar 3.19 paragrafi~35 min76 fontiInglese
  4. אשירה לה׳ כי גאה גאה וגו׳ “I will sing to Havayah, for He is exalted, exalted” The soul’s descent into the body is for a greater ascent: through Torah and mitzvos, and through the abundant mercy aroused by its teshuvah, it is joined to the Master of wonders, a level above all that its own love and awe could grasp. This is the level revealed at the splitting of the sea, which the Song calls “exalted, exalted.” Maamar 4.26 paragrafi~45 min103 fontiInglese
  5. לסוסתי ברכבי פרעה דמיתיך רעיתי “To My mare in Pharaoh’s chariots have I likened you, My beloved” The letters of a person’s words are “horses” that carry him beyond his own understanding: the “female letters” of prayer rise from below and draw down the “male letters” of the Torah, in which G‑d’s very essence comes to fill the world. Beyond both stands the splitting of the Sea, an arousal from above that nothing from below could call forth, and that is the joy of a mitzvah. Maamar 5.20 paragrafi~40 min95 fontiInglese
  6. ביאור על הנ״ל An Explanation of the Above An arousal from below can draw down G‑dliness only as high as Chochmah, the source of Malchus, while Keser, beyond all comparison, is revealed only of itself. That is why the Shechinah led Israel out of Egypt, an ascent from below, but went behind them at the Sea, where Keser was revealed and Israel rose above it. Maamar 6.Biur19 paragrafi~30 min41 fontiInglese
  7. ויאמר משה אכלהו היום כו׳ “And Moshe said, ‘Eat it today’” The manna came from a source above time and above the order of cause and effect, and could reach the world only through great contractions, the “drops of the night”; on Shabbos those contractions rest and rise, so the manna stopped, while every other flow, coming from the outer dimension of the worlds, continued. Maamar 7.20 paragrafi~30 min90 fontiInglese
  8. להבין ענין לחם משנה “To understand the matter of lechem mishneh” The two Shabbos loaves are placed one on top of the other according to the revealed Torah and side by side according to the Kabbalah because they mirror two levels: the chain of descent, in which every level stands above the next, and the Shabbos ascent into G‑d’s encompassing essence, before which above and below are equal. Maamar 8.36 paragrafi~1 h80 fontiInglese
