Die Maamarim 3
- ויקח קרח בן יצהר בן קהת בן לוי וגו׳ “Korach, son of Yitzhar, son of Kehas, son of Levi, took” Korach claimed that the encompassing light, the all-blue tallis and the hidden “oil” he traced himself to, needs no threads; Moshe answered that G‑d’s infinite light reaches the world and the heart only through contraction, through the “hairs” and threads of the tzitzis and Aharon’s beard, and that this narrow thread is what will open the full revelation in the Time to Come.
- ועבד הלוי הוא “And the Levite, he (hu), shall serve” (Numbers 18:23) The Levites’ service was to draw from the hidden “He,” Binah, into revelation. So too in prayer: contemplation through the mochin of Imma must first give birth to a revealed love that reaches the body, and then the higher, hidden mochin of Abba shine into it as the return of awe and bittul.
- והנה פרח מטה אהרן כו׳ ויגמול שקדים “And behold, the staff of Aharon had blossomed” (Numbers 17:23) Aharon’s staff bore almonds, the fastest fruit to ripen, because the kindness drawn down through Aharon and the Priestly Blessing reaches physical life swiftly. It comes from “abundant in kindness,” a kindness without limit, and so it passes the stage-by-stage judgment that holds other kindness back.
