The maamarim 2

  1. זכור את אשר עשה לך עמלק בדרך וגו׳ “Remember what Amalek did to you on the way” Every soul goes out of its own Egypt each day, and Amalek attacks on the way out: the brazen force that cuts the mind off from the heart, so that a person defies what he knows. The way through is the “back” of holiness, accepting G‑d’s yoke and forcing the heart through contemplation, which leads to the “front,” a love of G‑d that is one’s very life and delight; there Amalek has no hold, and G‑d’s Name and Throne become whole. 2. ביאור אין השם שלם An Explanation of “The Name Is Not Complete” G‑d’s Name and Throne become complete when the intellect is drawn down into the heart: first back to back, as love the mind compels and service beyond habit, and then face to face, in revealed delight. Amalek is the brazen hardness at the back of the neck that cuts the mind off from the heart; it must be fought every day, until love in delight blots it out.
